In Wisconsin, Tom works closely with two consortiums: the Dane County New Teacher Project, and the Southeastern Wisconsin New Teacher Project, and supports others across the state. His work for NTC outside of Wisconsin is largely focused in the midwest and with the Alaska Statewide Mentor Project.

His experience as an educator includes 25 years facilitating student learning in history and social studies at public middle and high schools and at the university level. He actively participates in efforts to improve history education and enhancing teacher leadership at the local and state level. A presenter at state and national conferences, Tom has a Master of Arts Degree in History from Virginia Tech, and has published a book and encyclopedia article on the American Civil War.
