7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Venue:

There will be two concurrent workshops. Participants will select one dependent upon their specific interests:

A

Launching the Next Generation of Teachers with Quality Induction
Jan Miles and Tom Howe, Presenters
This workshop will be of particular interest to trustees, superintendents, directors, principals, human resource specialists, union officials, teacher education faculty and all who have decision making roles in helping the induction, mentoring and support of new teachers.
Outline:
The first years of a teacher's career are among the most important. Not only do these early career experiences shape professional practice, but this is also the time when teachers learn to establish patterns of ongoing reflection and inquiry, high expectations, and collaboration. Join New Teacher Center presenters in examining what are the essential elements of a high quality, mentor-based induction program focused on teacher instructional practice and professional habits of mind that drive a process of continuous improvement. Research, examples of mentoring practice guided by nearly two decades of teacher induction experience, and policy implications will be shared.

B

Mentoring Models for the 21st Century
Richard E. Lange and Scott M. Scafidi
This workshop will be of particular interest to district coordinators, principals, teachers, union locals, teacher education faculty and all who will be actively involved with induction and mentoring programs for new teachers.

This all day workshop will introduce concepts and ideas that help assure the success of a new teacher induction program. The speakers will highlight various models of different mentoring programs that employ best practices when working with new teachers. Samples topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • mentor training tips,
  • evaluation of induction programs and the participants,
  • roles and responsibilities of both the mentors and mentorees,
  • differentiated mentoring for today’s teachers of various experience levels, and administrative issues.

This workshop will include extensive handouts and time for questions and comments.

Reservations

UBC's School Leadership Centre (SLC@UBC) invites interested parties to join us in a conference organized specifically to address the issue of teacher induction and mentoring. With rapid and significant teacher and AO retirees in the BC school system, and with many more new teachers starting their careers, the need for mentoring is evident. Yet there is little shared information about mentoring initiatives in the province. SLC@UBC will address the issue of mentoring with a series of events and initiatives. This conference is the first in that sequence.

If you are interested in attending this conference and for more information, please contact us via email: slc.edu@ubc.ca or telephone 604 827 5350.
